WEDDING DAY/KEEP BRITAIN WHITE

WEDDING DAY- The catalyst for a series of textiles using photography as a site of memory. WEDDING DAY explores some of the contradictions of a Black British identity.

Using a photograph of my mother and stepfather’s wedding day printed onto silk, I chose felt and stitch only things I could remember. I am intrigued by the gaze of the young me looking out, seemingly oblivious to the adults deep in conversation.

Fifty years later I discover the wedding day coincides with a ‘KEEP BRITAIN WHITE’ rally just a few miles away. I wondered more keenly what that conversation was about.
